MARILLION SONGS VARIATIONS LIST (Fish-era) __________________________________________ v. 1.9 (July 1st 1999) - by Roberto Meloni URL: http://people.zeelandnet.nl/steege/varilist.txt http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/best/355/varilist.txt http://web.tiscalinet.it/rmeloni/varilist.txt This list contains information about all released Marillion songs (Fish era only). For each song are listed: - all officially released versions (on vinyl, CD, cassette and videos) - where each version can be found - differences between the versions In this list we consider only official and "regular" releases. This means: - No bootlegs - No promos, demos etc. - No "local" releases and national compilations Exceptions to these rules: - "Brief Encounter" LP and "Lady Nina" 7" single, published only in the USA, and "Welcome to the Garden Party Live" (7" and 12"), published only in Germany. We include them in the list because: a) "Brief Encounter" has been released worldwide on CD; b) both "Brief Encounter" and "Welcome to the Garden Party Live" contain official tracks unavailable elsewhere; c) all these items were (presumably) released under the strict control of the band. For the choice of tracks, Mark Wilkinson's cover art, liner notes etc. these releases hold an important position in the Marillion discography, so they are surely worth including in this list. - The "Chelsea Monday" edit in the "He Knows You Know" US promo 12" Capitol SPRO-9930/9931: this particular version is not available in any other release. - The "Jigsaw" edit in the "Assassing" Canadian promo 12" Capitol SPRO-245: this particular version is not available in any other release. - Marillion songs included in compilations with other artists, when those particular versions are not available on official Marillion releases (He Knows You Know and Three Boats Down from the Candy in the "Reading Rock '82" LP, He Knows You Know in "Marquee Collection 1958-1983 - Volume 3" LP) or when those versions cannot be found elsewhere on CD (Garden Party 7" version in the "Born to Be Wild III" compilation CD and Incommunicado 7" version in the "Rock Anthems" compilation CD). N.B.: - Tracks included on picture discs usually do not differ from those included in normal "black vinyl" releases. There's only one exception: "Sugar Mice 7" PD (which contains the "Radio Edit" of Sugar Mice, instead of the "Album Version" which is on the "black vinyl" release). - The Dutch CD compilation "Kayleigh" is here included in its official EMI release named "Essential Collection". Please contact me (rmeloni@tiscalinet.it) for any contribution/correction to this list. Thank you for your cooperation! It has a restored extra instrumental section (20 more bars) before the verse "Listen as the syllables...", that was edited out in the original version. Live versions follow album version: 4) has a longer central instrumental section (20 bars instead of 8); 5) has additional backing vocals by Cori Josias. BEAUJOLAIS DAY 1) Demo: 4:51 - CD "Clutching at Straws" - Remastered Version (1999) Notes: this is an unreleased song from the Clutching at Straws recording sessions. It includes a guitar solo which was used in the released version of "Warm Wet Circles" (the one after the verse "And I'll always surrender to the warm wet circles..."). The leading guitar riff is similar to the leading riff of "Seasons End". Some lyrics were later used in Fish' "Fortunes of War" ("I heard a wheelchair whisper... of the night before"). BITTER SUITE 1) Album version: 7:13 - LP, CD, Cas "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Demo: 2:54 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 3) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 7:38 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) 4) Live (St. Goar, Germany - "Freilichtbuhne Loreley", July 18th '87): 7:04 - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) - CD "Live from Loreley" (1995) Notes: this song is joined to Lavender (which comes before) and Heart Of Lothian (which comes after). Bitter Suite is divided into five parts: i) Brief Encounter, ii) Lost Weekend, iii) Blue Angel, iv) Misplaced Rendevous, v) Windswept Thumb. In Misplaced Childhood not remastered CD, Misplaced Rendevous and Windswept Thumb are included in the Heart of Lothian track (in The Thieving Magpie only Windswept Thumb), but we consider them as a part of Bitter Suite, as reported in the sleeve lyrics of Misplaced Childhood, so songs lenght are calculated in accordance with this decision. The Demo version 2) was recorded in February 1985. The track contains only the first two parts of the song (Brief Encounter and Lost Weekend). The following track in the demo is Lords of the Backstage, followed by the remaining three parts of Bitter Suite in separate tracks: Blue Angel and Misplaced Rendezvous (see), which contains also Windswept Thumb. In this demo the song structure of both Brief Encounter and Lost Weekend is the same of the released version, with some small differences: in Brief Encounter the "spoken" part at the beginning starts 2 bars before, anticipating the keyboard theme. Live versions follow studio version, with longer instrumental passages and some lyrics additions. In the video and CD "Live from Loreley", although present, Bitter Suite isn’t reported in the tracklist (in this version: additional backing vocals by Cori Josias). BLIND CURVE 1) Studio version: 9:29 - LP, CD, Cas "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 9:39 - CD "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: this song is joined to Lords Of The Backstage (which comes before) and Childhoods End? (which comes after). Blind Curve is divided into five parts: i) Vocal Under A Bloodlight, ii) Passing Strangers, iii) Mylo, iv) Perimeter Walk, v) Threshold (in "The Thieving Magpie" CD, Lords Of The Backstage track includes Vocal Under A Bloodlight, Passing Strangers and Mylo, but we consider them as a part of Blind Curve). Live version has several variations compared to studio version. PS: In the Misplaced Childhood Demo (Misplaced Childhood - Remastered CD) the track containing Passing Strangers, Mylo, Perimeter Walk and Threshold is called "Passing Strangers" (see), and Vocal Under A Bloodlight is absent. BLUE ANGEL 1) Demo: 1:46 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) This Demo version was recorded in February 1985. In the released album version this track is part iii of Bitter Suite (see), while in the demo it's listed as a separate track. The demo version follows Lords of the Backstage and precedes Misplaced Rendezvous. The structure of the song is the same of the released version. CHARTING THE SINGLE 1) Studio version: 4:52 - 7" "He Knows You Know" (1983) - 12" "He Knows You Know" (1983) - LP, CD, Cas "B'Sides Themselves" (1988) 2) Remastered version: 4:51 - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 3) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", April 18th '83): 6:53 - 12" "Garden Party - The Great Cucumber Massacre" (1983) Notes: In the remastered version 2) the echoed "Yeah" in the beginning is missing. Live version follows studio version, but it’s slower and it has a brief extra keyboard intro. Fish introduces the song saying "This is your chance to say to your grandchildren: that’s me on the Marillion album!". CHELSEA MONDAY 1) Studio version: 8:16 - LP, CD, Cas "Script For A Jester's Tear" (1983) - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 2) Edited version: 4:36 - 12" "He Knows You Know" - US Promo Capitol SPRO-9930/9931 (1983) 3) Manchester Square Demo: 6:52 - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 4) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", April 18th '83): 7:25 - Video "Recital Of The Script" (1983) 5) Live (Utrecht, the Netherlands - "Vredenburg", October 15th 1985): 7:44 - 7" "Heart Of Lothian" (1985) - 12" "Heart Of Lothian" (1985) 6) Live (Leicester, England - "De Montford Hall", March 5th 1984): 8:01 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: 2) is an edited version only available in the 12" US Promo Capitol SPRO-9930/9931. The introduction ("..late one!") is missing. The guitar solo is edited: after the first 6 bars (at 2:31 in the album version) it skips to the last two bars of the solo (at 3:28 in the album version). After the verse "... at the risk of stark applause" the song skips directly to the finale (at 5:15 in the album version): the whole strophe "She'll pray for endless sundays... the whitered tuberose") is missing. The songs fades out at the beginning of the spoken "Hello John..." part. 3) is a demo recorded during the "Script" recording sessions. There are several differences between this demo and the released studio version 1). The main differences are: - The introduction ("..late one!") is missing. - The demo begins with a piano introduction instead of the bass guitar one. This piano introduction is 8 bars long, instead of the 4 bars of the album version. The piano theme leads the song during the first part, until the central instrumental section. - The central guitar solo is quite different. - The guitar part before and during the strophe "Drifting with her incense..." is played on acoustic guitar instead of the electric one. - The spoken part "Hello John..." is done by Mark Kelly instead of Fish, and it's slightly different. - The guitar part in the end of the song, during the final strophe "Catalogue princess..." is also acoustic. - The finale is quite different, more similar to the live versions one. All live versions follow studio version. Introducing 5) Fish says "This is a song dedicated to the ladies". in 5) Pete sings the verse "In the city of dreamers" several times during the strophe "Drifting with her incense..." CHILDHOODS END? 1) Studio version: 4:33 - LP, CD, Cas "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Demo: 2:23 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 3) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 2:48 - 12", SCD "Freaks" (1988) - CD "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: this song is joined to Blind Curve (which comes before) and White Feather (which comes after). Live version is shorter, it lacks the entire ending strophe and refrain from the verse "Hey you, you’ve survived...". The Demo version 2) was recorded in February 1985: at that stage the song was still instrumental. The demo begins with the same guitar riff aand with a long drum crescendo. The part between the first and the second strophe (where in the released version Fish sings "You, the child that once loved...") is different: later it became the instrumental base of the Lady Nina refrain. The finale is also different, with a fading-out guitar-leaded theme. CINDERELLA SEARCH 1) 7" version: 4:22 - 7" "Assassing" (1984) - CD "B'Sides Themselves" (1988) - CD "Essential Collection" (1996) 2) Full version: 5:38 - 12" "Assassing" (1984) - LP, Cas "B'Sides Themselves" (1988) - CD "Fugazi" - Remastered Version (1998) 3) Live (Montreal, Canada - "The Spectrum", June 19/20th '84): 5:47 - LP, CD, Cas "Real to Reel" (1984) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) Notes: 1), compared to 2), lacks the first strophe and has an early fading end. 3) follows full studio version, with a longer instrumental part before the verses "Welcome back to the circus". EMERALD LIES 1) Studio version: 5:12 - LP, CD, Cas "Fugazi" (1984) - CD "Fugazi" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Demo: 5:32 - CD "Fugazi" - Remastered Version (1998) 3) Live (Montreal, Canada - "The Spectrum", June 19/20th '84): 5:26 - CD, Cas "Real to Reel" (1984) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) Notes: the demo 2) is from the Fugazi recording sessions. The most important differences between this demo and the album version: - the instrumental opening before the verse "To be the prince..." is replaced by a brief and simple guitar introduction - keyboard riffs throughout the song - raw Fish vocals - the central part after the verse "...and they're my dreams!" is completely different (different music and shuffled lyrics). The songs continues with the verses: "Looking in shades of green (...) to mistrust you - Plundering your diaries (...) unearth your plot - Innocence, innocence..."; then an long instrumental part with a keyboard solo, then the verses: "To don the robes of Torquemada (...) within questions - Through the silk cut haze (...) on a courtroom drama - Let the coffee stains gather (...) on the cold linoleum - This is innocence". With the verses "And accusation moths that circle..." the song returns to the structure of the album version. Live version follows studio version, with the inversion of some verses: "Plundering your diares, unearth your plot - Ravaging your letters, I steal your thoughts" instead of "Plundering your diares, I steal your thoughts - Ravaging your letters, unearth your plot" of the studio version. Live version has also the repetition of the starting drum pattern in the middle of the song. EXILE ON PRINCES STREET 1) Demo: 5:29 - CD "Clutching at Straws" - Remastered Version (1999) Notes: this is an unreleased song from the sessions of the aborted follow up to "Clutching ay Straws". Part of the lyrics were later used in Fish' "Internal Exile" ("I saw a blue umbrella... "). FORGOTTEN SONS 1) Studio version: 8:22 - LP, CD, Cas "Script For A Jester's Tear" (1983) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 2) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", April 18th '83): 11:35 - Video "Recital Of The Script" (1983) 3) Live (Leicester, England - "De Montford Hall", March 5th 1984): 10:36 - LP, CD, Cas "Real to Reel" (1984) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) Notes: studio version starts with the sound of a tuning radio, which is absent from live versions. Live version are longer than the studio one, with longer instrumental passages and a long ad-lib finale. They also have a long break between the verses "approach... friend". Fish introduces 3) saying "This is dedicated to all those who fell on a pavement outside Harrods before last Christmas. This is a song for peace". FREAKS 1) Studio version: 4:05 - 7" "Lavender" (1985) - 12" "Lavender Blue" (1985) - LP "Brief Encounter" (1986) - LP, CD, Cas "B'Sides Themselves" (1988) - CD, Cas "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Live (Mannheim, Germany - "Maimarktgelande", June 21st 1986): 4:06 - CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) - 7" "Freaks" (1988) - 12", SCD "Freaks" (1988) Notes: live version follows studio version, with a short instrumental intro. FUGAZI 1) Studio version: 8:03 - LP, CD, Cas "Fugazi" (1984) - CD "Fugazi" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 8:14 - LP, Cas "Brief Encounter" (1986) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) 3) Live (Sheffield - "City Hall", March 6th 1984): 8:39 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: unlike the studio version, in live versions the initial section "Vodka intimate... tears from the real" is joined to the rest of the song. Live versions are also slightly different from studio versions: Pete’s backing vocals replace Fish’, there is a longer finale and several verses added here and there ("This is no place for children", "...and it is yours!", "We are all fugazi" etc.). Also, in live versions Pete sings "she crucified herself around my neck" instead of "she hung herself around my neck" of the studio version (in fact, in the "official" lyrics in the Fugazi album the word is "crucified", so it's Fish that changed it in the studio version!). GARDEN PARTY 1) Album version: 7:16 - LP, CD, Cas "Script For A Jester's Tear" (1983) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 2) Edited studio version: 4:26 - 7" "Garden Party" (1983) - Video "1982-86 The Videos" (1986) - 7" "Welcome To The Garden Party" (1986) - Video "A Singles Collection - Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other" (1992) - CD "Born to Be Wild III" (Compilation) (1994) 3) Alternative studio version: 7:16 - 12" "Garden Party" - The Great Cucumber Massacre" (1983) 4) Remix version: 7:11 - LP, CD, Cas "A Singles Collection" (1992) 5) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", April 18th '83): 6:49 - Video "Recital Of The Script" (1983) 6) Live (Leicester, England - "De Montford Hall", March 5th 1984): 6:31 - LP, CD, Cas "Real to Reel" (1984) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) 7) Live (Leicester, England - "De Montford Hall", March 5th 1984): 6:56 - 12" "Welcome To The Garden Party Live" (1986) Notes: The edited single version 2), compared to album version 1), lacks the intro (first 37 seconds), the second strophe ("Edgy eggs and queuing cumbers..."), the following first refrain ("Champagne corks are firing at the sun..." and the strophe "Aperitifs consumed en masse..." (it resumes with the verse "Doctor's son a parson's daughter..."; the central instumental section is shorter (it lacks the last 8 bars); the verse "I'm fucking" is replaced with "I'm miming". 3) is equal to 1), except for the verse "I’m fucking", replaced in 3) with "I’m miming". The remix version 4) is only slightly different from 1) (several small effects). All live versions follow studio album version. In 5) Fish sings by mistake the third strophe ("Aperitifs consumed en masse...") instead of the second ("Edgy eggs and queuing cumbers..."): so the third strophe is repeated twice. 6) is joined to Market Square Heroes (which comes after). 7) is the same as 6), but edited to have an abrupt finale. GOING UNDER 1) Studio version: 2:47 - 7" "Incommunicado" (1987) - 12", SCD "Incommunicado" (1987) - CD "Clutching at Straws" - Remastered Version (1999) 2) Edited studio version: 2:47 - CD, Cas "Clutching At Straws" (1987) - CD "Clutching at Straws" - Remastered Version (1999) Notes: in 2) the guitar solo in the central instrumental section is edited out. GRENDEL 1) Studio version: 17:16 - 12" "Market Square Heroes" (1982) - LP, CD, Cas "B'Sides Themselves" (1988) - CD "Essential Collection" (1996) 2) Fair Deal Studios version: 19:08 - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 3) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", April 18th '83): 18:00 - Video "Video EP" (1984) Notes: 2) is a demo recorded a few days before the recording sessions for the "Market Square Heroes" single. There are several differences between this demo and the released studio version 1). The main differences are: - An extra instrumental section (54 seconds) after the verse "...he cares not for the brave!", with keyboard and guitar solos. - A longer guitar part (14 more seconds, 8 more bars) at the end of the "Let the blood flow" chorus. - A different finale, with an instrumental crescendo. Live version follows studio version 1). HAPPY ENDING 1) Studio version: 0:08 - LP, CD, Cas "Clutching At Straws" (1987) - CD "Clutching at Straws" - Remastered Version (1999) HE KNOWS YOU KNOW 1) Album version: 5:23 - LP, CD, Cas "Script For A Jester's Tear" (1983) - CD "Essential Collection" (1996) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 2) 12" version: 5:06 - 12" "He Knows You Know" (1983) 3) Edited version: 3:30 - 7" "He Knows You Know" (1983) - Video "1982-86 The Videos" (1986) 4) Manchester Square Demo: 4:28 - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 5) Live (Reading, England, "Reading Rock Festival", August 29th '82): 4:25 - LP "Reading Rock '82" (Compilation) (1983) - LP "Marquee The Collection 1958-1983 - Volume 3" (Compilation) (1983) 6) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", April 18th '83): 5:20 - Video "Recital Of The Script" (1983) 7) Live (Sheffield - "City Hall", March 6th 1984): 5:13 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: 2), compared to 1), lacks the phone call ("Don’t give me your problems!") at the end of the song. 3) lacks the intro (first 25 seconds), after the line "You were walking with the death" it goes straight into the instrumental part, then it skips the following strophe ("Fast feed, crystal fever...") and goes straight in to following the refrain "He knows you know..." and the last strophe "Blank eyes..". It also lacks the phone call. 4) is a demo recorded during the "Script" recording sessions. There are several differences between this demo and the released studio version 1). The main differences are: - The whole introduction is missing, the songs starts with a brief instrumental section and then continues with the first verse "Light switch, yellow fever..". - After the first strophe, instead of the whole refrain "He knows, you know...", there are only two verses: "But he's got problems, he's got problems". - In the quiet section after the verse "...and you were walking with the dead" a short bass guitar line introduces the refrain "He knows, you know...". - The verse "You should have stayed at home and talk with father..." is replaced by "You should have listened to your father talking...". Live version 5) follows demo version 4) (it was recorded a few days before), but it has the whole first refrain "He knows, you know..." and the right verse "You should have stayed at home and talk with father..." at the end. In the "Reading Rock" LP there is a brief spoken introduction. Live versions 6) and 7) follow the album version 1). HEART OF LOTHIAN 1) Album version: 4:41 - LP, CD, Cas "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) 7" version: 3:40 - 7" "Heart Of Lothian" (1985) - 12" "Heart Of Lothian" (1985) - Video "1982-86 The Videos" (1986) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) 3) Full version: 5:43 - 12" "Heart Of Lothian" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 4) "Lady Nina" single edit: 3:48 - 7" "Lady Nina" (1986) 5) Demo: 3:49 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 6) Live (St. Goar, Germany - "Freilichtbuhne Loreley", July 18th '87): 4:33 - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) - CD "Live from Loreley" (1995) 7) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 5:13 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: album version and live versions are joined to Bitter Suite which comes before. 6) continues in Waterhole and Part 2 of Misplaced Childhood. The album version of Heart Of Lothian consists of 2 parts: Wide Boy and Curtain Call. Anyway, in the Misplaced Childhood CD the Heart Of Lothian track includes also the last 2 parts of Bitter Suite (Misplaced Rendevous and Windswept Thumb) and in The Thieving Magpie CD it includes Windswept Thumb, but we consider them as a part of Bitter Suite (see also Bitter Suite variations above). 2) and 3) don’t include Curtain Call. 2) includes Windswept Thumb and Wide Boy. 3) starts with an instrumental version of Misplaced Rendevous, continues with Windswept Thumb and Wide Boy. 3) has also 2 more verses "I was born with a heart of Lothian" in the final chorus. 4) starts at the fourth verse "It started raining" of Wide Boy, and goes on until the end, including the whole Curtain Call. The Demo version 5) was recorded in February 1985: it includes both Wide Boy and Curtain Call. The structure of the song is the same of the released version, with some small lyric variations. Live versions follow studio album version. HOTEL HOBBIES 1) Studio version: 3:36 - LP, CD, Cas "Clutching At Straws" (1987) - CD "Clutching at Straws" - Remastered Version (1999) 2) Live (St. Goar, Germany - "Freilichtbuhne Loreley", July 18th '87): 3:54 - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) - CD "Live from Loreley" (1995) Notes: Both version are joined to Warm Wet Circles which comes after. Live version has a longer instrumental introduction, additional backing vocals by Cori Josias and several small lyrics differences. INCOMMUNICADO 1) 7" version: 4:05 - 7" "Incommunicado" (1987) - Video "Sugar Mice c/w Incommunicado" (1987) - Video "A Singles Collection - Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other" (1992) - CD "Rock Anthems" (Compilation) (1994) 2) Album version: 5:16 - 12", SCD "Incommunicado" (1987) - LP, CD, Cas "Clutching At Straws" (1987) - LP, CD, Cas "A Singles Collection" (1992) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) - CD "Clutching at Straws" - Remastered Version (1999) 3) Alternative mix: 5:56 - 12", SCD "Incommunicado" (1987) - CD "Clutching at Straws" - Remastered Version (1999) 4) Live (St. Goar, Germany - "Freilichtbuhne Loreley", July 18th '87): 5:41 - 12", SCD "Warm Wet Circles" (1987) - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) - CD "Live from Loreley" (1995) 5) Live (Edinburgh, Scotland, - "The Playhouse", December 17/18/19th '87): 5:23 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: Compared to the album version, 1) lacks the instrumental intro (first 48 seconds) and the instrumental section in the middle is shorter. 3) is a long version: compared to the album version, the instrumental intro starts full volume (no fade in) and it's also longer. The keyboard part (8 bars) before the first stophe is replaced by a guitar part. Brief guitar riffs and echo on Fish' voice added here and there. Before the second refrain ("Sometimes it seems like I've been here before....") 8 extra instrumental bars with keyboards leading, and in the second refrain the drum track is different. In the end, after the verse "... it's the way that I choose", there is a strong echo effect on the first "Incommunicado", after that some verses "Incommunicado, Incommunicado" are edited out. Fade out is longer; drums fade out first, then voice, so it ends instrumental without drums. All live versions follow studio album version. Fish announces 4) saying "This is for all the drinkers in the audience!". In 4): additional backing vocals by Cori Josias. Live version 5) has several small lyrics differences: in the verse "... and I don't give a damn for the Fleet Street aficionados" Fish replaces the word "damn" with "fuck". In the verse "... a villa in France" Fish sings "a villa in Scotland". INCUBUS 1) Studio version: 8:32 - LP, CD, Cas "Fugazi" (1984) - CD "Fugazi" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Demo: 8:10 - CD "Fugazi" - Remastered Version (1998) 3) Live (Montreal, Canada - "The Spectrum", June 19/20th '84): 8:41 - LP, CD, Cas "Real to Reel" (1984) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) 4) Live (St. Goar, Germany - "Freilichtbuhne Loreley", July 18th '87): 8:58 - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) Notes: the demo 2) is from the Fugazi recording sessions. The most important differences between this demo and the album version: - guitar riffs in the opening - extra keyboard part before the verse "You've played this scene before..." - extra instrumental passage with guitar solo before the part "The darkness unleashes imagination..." (with lyrics variation: "darkness" instead of "darkroom") - the part "The darkness unleashes imagination (...) and the cat walks", is not quiet as in the released version: full drums beat the time - lyrics variation: "You've played this scene before..." again instead of "I've played this scene before..." - the music of the second half of the song is quite different from the released version: instead of the quiet piano-leaded theme, the music of the final section "Your perimeter of courtiers...." is used for the whole remaining part of the song, starting from "You can't brush me under the carpet..." until the end (the guitar solo is missing) Live versions follow studio version. 4) has an extra drum intro, a longer instrumental passage (16 more bars) before the verse "But now I’m the snake in the grass" and additional backing vocals by Cori Josias. INTRO - LA GAZZA LADRA 1) Orchestral piece: 2:09 - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) 2) Orchestral piece: 2:46 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: this is part of an orchestral piece composed by Gioacchino Rossini. Marillion used it for the opening of their concerts in the "Clutching At Straws" tour. JIGSAW 1) Studio version: 6:50 - LP, CD, Cas "Fugazi" (1984) - CD "Essential Collection" (1996) - CD "Fugazi" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Edited version: 3:54 - 12" "Assassing" - Canadian Promo Capitol SPRO-245 (1984) 3) Live (Sheffield - "City Hall", March 6th 1984): 6:24 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: 2) is an edited version only available in the 12" Canadian Promo Capitol SPRO-245. After the verse "We are siamese children related by the heart" it skips to "Holding the word scalpels on trembling lips" (the verse "Bleeding from the surgery of initial confrontation" is missing). The first refrain "Stand straight...." and the whole following strophe "Drowning tequila sunsets... snowblind in an avalanche zone" are missing. The guitar solo is shortened: after the first 8 bars (at 3:54 in the album version) it skips to the last 4 bars of the solo (at 4:19 in the album version). After the verse "We reached ignition point from the sparks of pleasantries" it skips to "You must have known that I was concealing an escape" (the verse "We sensed the smoke advancing from the horizons" is missing). It fades out some seconds earlier. Live version follows studio version. JUST FOR THE RECORD 1) Studio version: 3:10 - LP, CD, Cas "Clutching At Straws" (1987) - CD "Clutching at Straws" - Remastered Version (1999) KAYLEIGH 1) Album version: 4:03 - LP, CD, Cas "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) 7" version: 3:33 - 7" "Kayleigh" (1985) - Video "1982-86 The Videos" (1986) - LP, CD, Cas "A Singles Collection" (1992) - Video "A Singles Collection - Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other" (1992) - CD "Essential Collection" (1996) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) 3) Alternative mix: 4:00 - 12" "Kayleigh" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 4) Extended version: 4:00 - 12" "Kayleigh" (1985) 5) Demo: 4:06 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 6) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 4:11 - LP, Cas "Brief Encounter" (1986) - 12" "Welcome To The Garden Party Live" (1986) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) 7) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 3:53 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) - 7" "Freaks" (1988) - 12", SCD "Freaks" (1988) 8) Live (St. Goar, Germany - "Freilichtbuhne Loreley", July 18th '87): 3:49 - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) - CD "Live from Loreley" (1995) Notes: studio album version and live versions are joined to Pseudo Silk Kimono (which comes before) and Lavender (which comes after), except for 5) (only Lavender after). 2) has a halved central instrumental passage (12 bars instead of 24). 3) has a lighter instrumental part on the introduction and on the first strophe since the first refrain "Kayleigh, is it too late...", echo on voice starting from the second strophe, with some words edited out ("By the way", "Please excuse me", "So sorry"). 4) is equal to album version, but stand-alone. The Demo version 5) was recorded in February 1985. The structure of the song is the same of the released version, but most lyrics are different. Live versions follow studio album version: in 8) Fish adds a few verses in the end of the song before Lavender starts ("We were wrong, oh so very wrong"). LADY NINA 1) 7" version: 3:43 - 7" "Kayleigh" (1985) - 7" "Lady Nina" (1986) - Video "1982-86 The Videos" (1986) - CD, LP, Cas "B'Sides Themselves" (1988) - CD "Essential Collection" (1996) 2) Extended version: 5:44 - 12" "Kayleigh" (1985) - LP, Cas "Brief Encounter" (1986) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) Notes: 2) has a shorter instrumental opening, a shorter central section and an early fading end. LAVENDER 1) Album version: 2:28 - LP, CD, Cas "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) 7" version: 3:41 - 7" "Lavender" (1985) - 12" "Lavender" (1985) - Video "1982-86 The Videos" (1986) - LP, CD, Cas "A Singles Collection" (1992) - Video "A Singles Collection - Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other" (1992) - CD "Essential Collection" (1996) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) 3) "Lavender Blue": 4:18 - 12" "Lavender" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 4) Demo: 2:37 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 5) Live (St. Goar, Germany - "Freilichtbuhne Loreley", July 18th '87): 2:33 - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) - CD "Live from Loreley" (1995) 6) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 2:27 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: studio album version and live versions are joined to Kayleigh (which comes before) with a brief piano part, and Bitter Suite (which comes after). 2) is longer than the album version: it has a third extra strophe after the first two ("Lavender dreams, dilly dilly Lavender true - When you miss me dilly dilly I can miss you - A penny for your thoughts my dear..."), a longer instrumental section with some more verses ("Oh, I’m going back to you - Gotta find my way back to you - For your love...") and an added finale ("I’m always walking in the park - Always dreaming of a spark - From you"). 3) lacks the piano intro (starts with the verse "I was walking in the park..."); it has a lighter instrumental part on the first strophe and the first refrain; it has three extra instrumental parts: between the first refrain and the second, between the second refrain and the guitar solo, and a longer guitar solo; it has the same finale of 2), but only instrumental. The Demo version 4) was recorded in February 1985. The structure of the song is the same of the released version, with four more bars between the last strophe and the beginning of the guitar solo. Live versions follow studio album version. 5) has additional backing vocals by Cori Josias; before the refrain, Fish incites the audience saying "This is for you... and I could hear them singing, singing", and then he lets them sing some verses ("Lavender blue", "I.O.U. for your love" etc.). LORDS OF THE BACKSTAGE 1) Studio version: 1:53 - LP, CD, Cas "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Demo: 1:46 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 3) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 2:04 - CD "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: the studio and live version of this song are joined to Waterhole (which comes before) and Blind Curve (which comes after). The Demo version 2) was recorded in February 1985, and it's in a completely different position: side 1 of Misplaced Childhood, between Lost Weekend and Blue Angel (parts of Bitter Suite). The beginning of the demo is different: it starts with the main keyboard theme, immediately followed by a drum roll. The structure of the song is the same of the released version, with a different (less prominent) guitar sound. Live version follows studio version. In 3) the CD track also includes parts i, ii and iii of Blind Curve (Vocal Under A Bloodlight, Passing Strangers and Mylo), but we consider them as a part of Blind Curve, so songs lenght are calculated in accordance with this decision. MARGARET 1) Live (Edinburgh - "The Playhouse", April 7th 1983) - Edited Version: 4:05 - 7" "Garden Party" (1983) 2) Live (Edinburgh - "The Playhouse", April 7th 1983) - Full Version: 12:17 - 12" "Garden Party - The Great Cucumber Massacre" (1983) - LP, CD, Cas "B'Sides Themselves" (1988) Notes: "B’Sides Themselves" sleeve notes state December ‘83 as the recording date: this is wrong, the exact date is 7 April 1983, as reported in the 12" "Garden Party - The Great Cucumber Massacre". 1) is the same version of 2), with an early fade out. MARKET SQUARE HEROES 1) "Antichrist" version: 4:17 - 7" "Market Square Heroes" (1982) - 12" "Market Square Heroes" (1982) 2) "Battlepriest" version: 4:17 - Video "1982-86 The Videos" (1986) - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 3) Re-recorded version: 4:48 - 12" "Punch & Judy" (1984) - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 4) Re-recorded edited version: 3:56 - 7" "Punch & Judy" (1984) - 7" "Welcome To The Garden Party" (1986) - LP, CD, Cas "B'Sides Themselves" (1988) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) 5) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", April 18th '83): 8:07 - Video "Recital Of The Script" (1983) 6) Live (Leicester, England - "De Montford Hall", March 5th 1984): 7:31 - LP, CD, Cas "Real to Reel" (1984) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) Notes: 1) is equal to 2), except for the word "Antichrist" replaced with "Battlepriest". Versions 3) and 4) were recorded with the drummer John Martyr; they have a shorter instrumental introduction (4 bars instead of 8). 4) has also an extra strophe ("I give peace signs when I wage war in the disco..."). 1) and 4) have a fading finale, 3) doesn’t. Live versions follow studio version 4), but 5) has the 8-bar introduction. Both live versions have a longer instrumental passage before the verse "I am your antichrist...", in which Fish plays percussions (in live version 5 this section is very long). In live version 6), before the extra strophe, Fish introduces the band (Pete introduces Fish). MISPLACED RENDEZVOUS 1) Demo: 1:56 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) This Demo version was recorded in February 1985. It consists of two parts: Misplaced Rendezvous and Windswept Thumb (in the released version of the Misplaced Childhood album Misplaced Rendezvous and Windswept Thumb are part iv and v of Bitter Suite - see). The song structure of both parts is the same of the released version, with some small lyrics differences. PASSING STRANGERS 1) Demo: 9:17 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) This Demo version was recorded in February 1985. It's divided into four parts: i) Passing Strangers, ii) Mylo, iii) Perimeter Walk, iv) Threshold (the Misplaced Childhood Remastered CD sleeve notes wrongly report that this track is divided into 3 parts: Mylo, Perimeter Walk and Threshold). In the released version of the Misplaced Childhood album, the four parts of this song are part of Blind Curve (see). In the demo Vocal Under a Bloodlight (part i of Blind Curve) is absent. Part 1 - Passing Strangers: the structure of the song is the same of the released version, the guitar solo is quite different. Part 2 - Mylo: the structure of the song is quite different from the released version: before the first strophe there are four more instrumental bars, the keyboard solo in the middle is different, the verses after the keyboard solo are a repetition of the first 2 strophes. This part ends with 4 more bars with guitar solo. Part 3 - Perimeter Walk: same structure of the released version, but the lyrics are quite different. Part 4 - Threshold: same structure of the released version, with slightly different lyrics especially in the final part. PSEUDO SILK KIMONO 1) Album version: 2:15 - LP, CD, Cas "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 2) Demo: 2:11 - CD "Misplaced Childhood" - Remastered Version (1998) 3) Live (St. Goar, Germany - "Freilichtbuhne Loreley", July 18th '87): 0:32 - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) - CD "Live from Loreley" (1995) 4) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 2:19 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: 4) follows studio album version, 3) is very short and only instrumental (it isn’t reported in the track list in the cover). The Demo version 2) was recorded in February 1985: the structure of the song is the same of the released version, with less guitar. PUNCH & JUDY 1) 7" version: 3:22 - 7" "Punch & Judy" (1984) - 12" "Punch & Judy" (1984) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) 2) Album version: 3:22 - LP, CD, Cas "Fugazi" (1984) - CD "Essential Collection" (1996) - CD "Fugazi" - Remastered Version (1998) 3) Demo: 3:51 - CD "Fugazi" - Remastered Version (1998) 4) Live (Sheffield - "City Hall", March 6th 1984): 3:23 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: 1) is only slightly different from 2). The difference is in the echo on Fish' voice in the verses "Punch, Punch and Judy..." in the beginning (0:22 - 0:30). In the album version echo on voice is on "Punch" and on the third "Punch and Judy", while in the 7" version echo is on the second "Punch and Judy". Notes on "The Best of Both Worlds" wrongly state that it would contain the album version. The demo 3) is from the Fugazi recording sessions. The most important differences between this demo and the album version: - a bit slower - raw Fish vocals - much more evident guitar riffs throughout the song - longer instrumental passages between the verses and each refrain "Whatever happened..." (the whole main theme is played twice) - some lyrics changes: "dreaming about the tits on the tall redhead" instead of: "losing the war in the Waistlands spread" - shorter instrumental finale Live version follows album version. SCRIPT FOR A JESTER'S TEAR 1) Studio version: 8:40 - LP, CD, Cas "Script For A Jester's Tear" (1983) - LP, CD "The Best of Both Worlds" (1997) - CD "Script for a Jester's Tear" - Remastered Version (1997) 2) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", April 18th '83): 8:31 - Video "Recital Of The Script" (1983) 3) Live (London, England - "Hammersmith Odeon", January 9/10th '86): 8:52 - LP, Cas "Brief Encounter" (1986) - 12" "Welcome To The Garden Party Live" (1986) - CD "Real to Reel/Brief Encounter" (1997) 4) Live (St. Goar, Germany - "Freilichtbuhne Loreley", July 18th '87): 8:56 - Video "Live from Loreley" (1987) - CD "Live from Loreley" (1995) 5) Live (Sheffield - "City Hall", March 6th 1984): 8:46 - LP, CD, Cas "The Thieving Magpie - La Gazza Ladra" (1988) Notes: live versions are very similar, they all follow studio version with a longer ad-lib finale. Notes: Demo version 4) is taken from the Clutching at Straws recording sessions. The structure of this version is basically the same of the released version, with some lyrics variations, especially in the second strophe ("I heard Sinatra...") and in the finale. Live versions follow the studio album version. Fish introduces 5) saying: "This song was originally inspired by a dream in the Holyday Inn in Milwakee. The Demo version 2) was recorded in February 1985. The strophes are completely absent, it's just a repetition of the refrain ("I will wear your white feathers..."). In 3) Fish makes a long spoken introduction to the song.
